Harpoon Scenario: The Hunt for Captain Strangelov

General Introduction
=====================

With the breakup of the Soviet Union and WARPAC came the dissolution of their
formidable military structure, including the powerful Soviet surface navy
and the world's largest submarine fleet. Immediately upon Gorbachev's
resignation, the ships in port were inherited along with the ports themselves
by the governments of the fledgling republics. The disposition of the ships
at sea, however, was an unresolved issue for some time. This was especially
troubling to NATO, as many of the orphan ex-Soviet units were known to be
armed with tactical nuclear weapons.

Under ordinary circumstances, naval commanders with control over nuclear
weapons are watched very carefully for signs of disloyalty or mental
aberration, but in the confusion of the national breakup a renegade Soviet
captain just might unleash his atomic firepower before anyone could stop him.

Notes
=====

This scenario is designed to be played from either side, but I think it's
much more challenging to play the Red side. And yes, it IS possible for
Red to win, although I expect it will be much harder for those of you who
didn't write the scenario :) If you plan to play both sides, I strongly
recommend playing the Blue side first. Once you've played the Red side
most of the suspense is gone.

SEMI-SPOILER
============

One of the Red victory conditions involves launching an attack on a land
base from a unit at sea. Since the Scenario Editor I'm using (v1.0) is
buggy and won't allow me to enter this action without crashing, I had to
cook up an alternative victory condition. Therefore, if the Red unit manages
to get within range to attack its target, a Red minimum victory will be
registered even if the Red unit doesn't do anything. Those of you who have
read the Red briefing know exactly what I'm talking about. Blue players
should check out the Red briefing AFTER the game is over to find out what
was going on.
